The value of a diamond is not always an easy thing to determine without the proper education and tools to assess the stone. Fortunately, there are diamond price calculators that allow people to estimate what their diamond could be worth. The value of a diamond is largely dependent on how it grades in the different scales for things like size and color. If you are interested in selling your diamond, or just finding out what it is worth, we will walk you through the different steps and how to use the diamond price calculator below:

DIAMOND SHAPE
The shape of your diamond is the first thing that the calculator will ask you for. This can easily be determined by simply looking at your diamond and matching it to the one that best fits the diamond displayed in the calculator. Looking from the top-down, you will easily be able to see the shape, now evaluate the way the diamond is cut to differentiate similar shapes like, Cushion and Radiant. Choose the best matching shape if you are unsure of what the exact shape may be.
DIAMOND WEIGHT
From here, the diamond’s weight will be the next part of the calculator and we have a couple methods to help you find the amount of carats your diamond has. Carats are a unit of measurement used to weigh diamonds, and while generally a larger diamond is worth more, the other factors still greatly contribute to a diamond’s value. If you do not have any documentation on what your diamond weighs, follow the instructions to one of the formulas below:
Scale Method
You will need to have a scale that measures in grams to weigh your diamond.
2 Grams = 1 Carat, so divide your diamond’s weight in grams by .2
Example: Diamond Weight = .3 grams
.3/.2 = 1.5 Carats
Measurement Method
If you don’t have a scale, the measurement method is another option you could use. Different cuts will use a slightly different formula.
Round Cut Diamonds – Weight (Carats) = Diameter1 (mm) x Diameter2 (mm) x Depth (mm) x 0.006
Example: 4mm x 4mm x 3mm x 0.006 = .28 Carats
Square Cut Diamonds – Weight (Carats) = Length (mm) x Wigth (mm) x Depth (mm) x Coefficient
To determine the proper coefficient to use for your diamond, you will need to find the L/W Ratio by dividing the Length (mm) by Width (mm).
L/W Ratio = 1.25 – Coefficient = .0080
L/W Ratio = 1.50 – Coefficient = .0090
L/W Ratio = 2.00- Coefficient = .0100
L/W Ratio = 2.50 – Coefficient = .0105
For example,
Length = 5mm
Width = 2mm
Depth = 3mm
L/W Ration – 5/2 = 2.5 – Coefficient = .0105
5mm x 2mm x 3mm x .0105 = .315 Carats
After you have found the weight of your diamond in Carats, use the slider on the diamond price calculator or enter the number in the box.
DIAMOND COLOR
The color of a diamond can range from colorless to a heavy yellow tint, and the more yellow it is, the less your diamond will be worth. Diamond color is measured on a scale from D – Z, with D graded diamonds being completely colorless. Because it can be difficult to determine the proper color grading, you can narrow it down by seeing which one of the three categories below your diamond best fits in.
D E F (Colorless)
If your diamond is/was set in platinum or white gold, it will likely fall in this category. Because a yellow tint is more noticeable with those metals, jewelers tend to use D, E, and F graded diamonds in this pieces. It will be hard to see a difference between these colors with the naked eye.
G H I J (Near Colorless)
Small tinges of yellow are noticed in this category, but can still be sometimes used in platinum jewelry. Even with these all being considered near colorless, you will see a significant difference in value between a G and J graded diamond.
K L M (Faint Yellow Tint)
A yellow tint usually appears to the naked eye around K graded diamonds. Engagement rings with yellow gold can mask the yellow tint and often goes unnoticed. These diamonds can be looked at for their value as many still are unable to see any yellow tint.
Even though it is difficult to find where the color of your diamond may fall on the scale, use the picture above to give your best guess. Again, move the slider on the diamond price calculator to where your diamond’s color best matches.
DIAMOND CLARITY
The only thing left to determine is the clarity of your diamond. You may have heard of stones being “cloudy” and this is referring to the diamond’s clarity. There are six different clarity categories with eleven different possible grades. Flawless diamonds have no blemishes under a 10x microscope and will be worth the most money. You may have a 10x magnifying glass in your home that you can inspect your diamond with. Descriptions on the diamond clarity grades are below:
FL (Flawless) – Using 10× magnification, no inclusions or blemishes can be seen by a skilled grader
IF (Internally Flawless) – Blemishes are visible to a skilled grader under 10× magnification but no inclusions
VVS1 and VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included) – Under 10× magnification, inclusions are difficult to see
VS1 and VS2 (Very Slightly Included) – A skilled grader using 10x magnification has little difficulty seeing minor inclusions
SI1 and SI2 (Slightly Included) – Inclusions are noticeable to a skilled grader under 10x magnification
I1, I2, and I3 (Included) – Transparency and brilliance are affected and inclusions are obvious under 10× magnification
After you have found the clarity of the diamond, move the last slider on the diamond price calculator. From here, just click the Appraise My Diamond button and wait to receive the value of your diamond.
It will take just a minute to find the value of your diamond because Diamond Buyers International also include other factors that could increase the value of your diamond. Factors like buyer demand and their current inventory could mean your diamond is more desirable than only the gradings suggest.
